About

Well, hello!  I’m Barbara, but most people call me Babs. This is my food/music/booze blog – three of my favorite things, incorporating many of my favorite people.  Some might call that synergy.  I call it my life.

Devil’s Apricot started from a (probably hungover) misunderstanding of a British commentator’s remark about playing devil’s advocate.  I was helping clean my friend Biller’s apartment in London in preparation for a Pop Idol party (true story) and we both heard the same thing.  My brain works in mysterious ways and it instantly decided that Devil’s Apricot was going to be a magazine devoted to food, music and alcohol – a spirited guide to living, if you will.  It only took nine years to actually make it happen…

About me – I’m from F***NO, California and grew up unaware that brussels sprouts came in any form other than  frozen into a rectangular package with a Green Giant logo on it. I’ve come a long way, baby – all the way to Seattle via Los Angeles, a pitstop in Portland, on and off residency in Melbourne, Australia and lots of time in ‘Frisco (sorry – couldn’t resist), NYC and London. I now make Ethiopian food, bitchin’ tamales and a mean Tom Yum soup – all from scratch. I once McGyvered handmade tortillas in London on a bank holiday using an empty vodka bottle as a rolling pin.  Having said that, I’ll always be from F***NO, and I will never deny the deliciousness of thinly sliced, crispy fried Spam topped with melting slices of cheddar and served on white bread with French’s mustard, or the strange allure of port wine cheese balls.

I speak sarcasm fluently. I’ve worked in the music biz for the past couple decades. I love food, music and alcohol. I’m a Libra, and I know way too many people – all of which is handy if you’re going to start a blog where you get your witty, creative friends to kick down their favorite recipes and hangover cures and maybe turn you on to great music you might’ve otherwise missed…
